Green Tea Smoothie Recipes

Here at SoleCup we’re always trying to make the most of our reusable glass cup, we use it for coffees, teas (especially loose teas) and even smoothies. We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite loose leaf green tea and matcha green tea smoothies for you to try at home!

We love seeing our SoleCups in action, share your pictures of your green tea smoothies in a SoleCup by tagging us @thesolecup.

Why Green Tea?

Green tea is full of antioxidants, known for elevating mood and concentration. Green Teas have a mild caffeine content, meaning they’re great for mornings and a little boost without the crash! Your typical matcha green tea contains more caffeine than loose green tea, with around half a cup of coffees worth.

You can also purchase decaffeinated green tea, however, if you’re sensitive to caffeine please be aware it may not be totally caffeine-free. Experiment with the amount of green tea you use, start off small and increase the amount dependent on your own personal taste.

What type of Green Tea should I use?

There are many different forms of Green Tea, you can source Loose Green Tea, Green Tea Teabags or Matcha.

Loose Tea is made up of generally higher grade quality tea than found in tea bags, which contain dust and fannings. When steeped, loose tea leaves will unravel leaving a delicious flavoursome tea.

Matcha is the powder version of green tea, it contains all the vitamins and minerals found in the tea leaves with a much richer flavour. This makes for a more simple smoothie recipe. There is no need to steep your tea or grind your tea leaves as this is all done for you!

For our smoothie recipes, we’ll give you hints and tips on how to make the perfect matcha, or loose green tea smoothies. Why not try both and see which you prefer?

NOTE: For our recipes, we use vegan milk, but you can substitute this for any type of milk you prefer. Experiment with flavours, tastes and textures!

Matcha Green Tea Recipes

All of our Matcha recipes can be made in 5-10 minutes, which makes them super simple and perfect for an early morning start. Looking for a quicker smoothie? Prep your ingredients the night before, simply add them to the blender, whizz away and you’re ready to go.

Powdered Matcha Green Tea
Mango Matcha

We’re starting with a simple 5-ingredient matcha smoothie! You’ll find it smooth, creamy and full of flavour.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp Matcha Green Tea Powder
  • 1 Large Mango (chopped)
  • 2 Frozen Bananas (peeled)
  • 2 Handfuls of Spinach
  • 1 Cup of Coconut Milk (You can also use Almond Milk)

  1. Add the milk to your blender first, then add your matcha powder and spinach. Blend this together before adding the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Add the chopped mango and bananas to your blender. Blend your ingredients until your smoothie is a smooth consistency.
  3. If you prefer a lighter smoothie add water in small amounts, blending and repeat until you find the desired consistency.
Matcha Green Tea Smoothie
Morning Matcha

Another Simple Matcha Smoothie, perfect for breakfast.

Ingredients

  • ½ a Cup of Yoghurt (Alpro)
  • 2 tbsp of Agave Syrup
  • 1 tsp of Matcha Powder
  • ½ a Cup of Ice Cubes
  1. Add your ice cubes first, followed by the yoghurt, Agave syrup and finally the matcha. Blend all your ingredients together, pour into your SoleCup and enjoy!

If you want an extra pop of flavour or a bigger caffeine boost for the morning add extra matcha! We use Alpro Vegan yoghurt in our recipes, but you can use greek yoghurt or alternatives.

Matcha Green Tea Smoothie in Jar
Fruity Matcha Tea Smoothie

With a hit of your daily antioxidants, this one is the perfect treat on a lunch break. We love mixed berries, but you can choose any of them, they’re all delicious!

Ingredients

  • ½ a Cup of Yoghurt (Alpro)
  • ¼ Cup of mixed berries; blueberries, raspberries and blackberries.
  • ½ a Cup of Ice
  • 1 tsp of Matcha Powder
  • 1 tbsp of Flaxseed
  1. Add your ingredients to your blender, adding your matcha powder last. Whizz it together until smooth.
  2. You can choose to use frozen berries for this one, add a small amount of water if you do!

For a sweeter taste, why not add some Agave syrup? You can enjoy this recipe with or without the flaxseeds. Experimenting? You can even add some mint or ginger for extra kick.

We’ve given you three delicious matcha smoothie recipes to try at home, let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Looking to experiment with matcha? Tropical fruits compliment matcha green tea smoothies, so that’s fruit such as mangos, bananas, pineapple, passion fruit and papaya. The options are endless and if you’ve found a great matcha green tea recipe we’d love to hear from you.

Loose Leaf Green Tea Smoothies

For our loose leaf green tea smoothies you can either steep your loose tea, or you can grind your loose tea into a powder. Both ways will give you different flavours and textures. We like to vary the recipe depending on what we have in the cupboards!

When steeping your green tea, make a loose leaf green tea as you would normally, then allow your tea to cool down before adding it to your blender.

If you are grinding your loose leaf tea, grind it until you have small powdery tea. You can then add it to your smoothies just as we did with the matcha recipes.

Apple Green Tea smoothie

This one’s so yummy, for extra protein and fibre add some Chia seeds, you can add some agave syrup for extra sweetness too!

Ingredients

  • 1 Apple (peeled and pitted)
  • ½ a Cup of Alpro Yoghurt
  • 1 Cup of Ice
  • ½ a Cup of Brewed Green Tea (allow this to chill first)
  • 1 tbsp of Lemon Juice
  • 2 tbsp of Chia Seeds (optional)
  1. Roughly chop your apple, put your apple, ice and yoghurt into a blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Add your brewed green tea and the rest of the ingredients. Finish by blending the ingredients.

Chocolate Green Tea Smoothie

Who doesn’t love chocolate? The combination of chocolate and green tea will leave you wanting more!

Ingredients

  • ¼ Cup of Cocoa Powder
  • 1 ½ Frozen Bananas (chopped and peeled)
  • 2 tbsp of Almond Butter
  • 1 tbsp Agave Syrup
  • ½ Cup of Almond Milk
  • ½ Cup of Ice
  • ½ Cup of Brewed Green Tea (allow this to chill first)
  1. Add your wet ingredients first, followed by the frozen banana and cocoa powder. Whizz this up until combined.

Adding your dry ingredients last will help to ensure the mixture is fully combined! Don’t have any almond butter? Why not try switching this for some peanut butter instead.

Strawberry Sundae Green Tea Smoothie

We love strawberries, and this one is the perfect sweet treat for a hot summer day. It’s also loaded with antioxidants and potassium too, that’s a win-win!

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup of Frozen Strawberries
  • 1 Frozen Banana (chopped and peeled)
  • ½ a Cup of Alpro Yoghurt
  • ½ a Cup of Ice
  • ½ a Cup of Brewed Green Tea (allow this to chill first)
  1. Add all your ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth.

If you don’t have frozen ingredients, you can use fresh fruits and add some extra ice! If you find your smoothie quick thick and like a smoother drink, add a dash of wash or a little extra green tea.

You can use all of the above smoothie recipes with either loose leaf tea or matcha green tea powder. However, if you’re using matcha for our loose leaf tea smoothies, add a small amount of water for a smooth textured smoothie.

So there you have it, six simple green tea smoothie recipes to get you started!

Personally I don’t love regular green tea, but I have to buy the matchapowder. Where do I get it? Does trader joe’s or whole foods have it, or do I need to go to a Shoprite or something?
